What is a Co-ownership?

Dogs sold on co-ownership are the most promising puppies in the litter.
Co-ownership is a great opportunity for anyone interested in getting their feet wet in the world of purebred dogs.
In fact, it is how we got started. If you have an interest in showing, breeding or training for competition, this may be right for you.
Co-ownership may also be appropriate for those who are interested in free boarding and are willing to keep the dog intact.
    Terms of a co-ownership are:
  • Breeder(s) will be listed as co-owner and buyer(s) as primary owner(s) on the registration paperwork.
  • Dog must remain intact (not spayed or neutered) until they are done showing and/or breeding.
  • Dog lives with buyer and buyer takes on normal ownership responsibilities (feeding, veterinary care).
  • Buyer must be within 2 hours driving distance of North Shore Kennels with no intentions of moving (Ontario or Michigan).
  • Dog is welcomed at North Shore Kennels for free boarding (up to 2 weeks per year) for the lifetime of the dog and any canine housemates are welcomed at a discounted boarding rate.
  • Dog will be shown by the breeder (usually this amounts to 3-4 weekends per year over the course of 1-2 years - if planned in advance can often be co-ordinated with buyers' vacations and boarding or another time that is convenient for the buyer). The dog can also be shown by the owner and we are happy to provide instruction, at no charge, to anyone interested in trying their hand at handling. There is ample opportunity for youngsters (under 18) who are interested in Junior Handling as well.
  • Breeding details are worked out based on the sex of the dog and the interests/desires of the buyer at the time of purchase.
Co-ownership is not for everyone but provides benefits for both the buyer and the breeder. As breeders, we are able to maintain diversity in our breeding program while maintaining a reasonable number of dogs on-site. Buyers are given the opportunity to own dogs that would not normally be available to the general public, who - more often than not - become titled champions, and they don't have to worry about what to do with their dog when they go on vacation. Some of our best friends in the dog community (commonly known as our "dog family") have resulted from co-ownership relationships. Involvement of the co-owners can be varied - anything from travelling across North America competing with your dog or just letting us pick them up for the day at local shows. Whatever suits your lifestyle can work. If this is something you are interested in - please contact us. We can provide references from others with whom we have co-owned dogs.
